Forest School

Forest school aims to encourage motivation, risk taking, the love of learning and team work. We aim to enrich personal and social skills as well as independence. Forest school wants to increase the understanding among young people of the local environment e.g. trees, woodlands and wildlife. The woodland area provides a great setting for education. It helps to develop self-esteem and confidence through hands on learning experience. The children have lots of space to explore independently, use their imagination and have lots of fun at the same time.

We have the use of two sites, one of which is on the school grounds. This is used by the Caterpillars, and for days when the weather does not allow us to use the other sites, e.g. gale force winds and heavy snow or icy conditions.  The second site is private woodland near Cropredy and is owned by a local farmer. Cropredy woods are used by Butterflies and upwards.

We have two minibuses that are driven by fully licensed and insured drivers and these are used for most forest school excursions. There are two level three qualified Forest School Leaders within the school, Mrs Tomalin and Mrs Nicholson.

All children going to Forest School should arrive at school in the morning wearing their Forest School clothes. In the cold weather they should wear a few layers of warm clothes, hats, gloves and a couple of pairs of socks to keep feet warm in wellies. Even in the warmer weather children should still wear long trousers and a long sleeved top.

Wellies are not allowed to be worn in school so other footwear should be provided for indoors. It is our policy that if your child is well enough to come to school on their Forest School day then they will go out to the woods. Teachers have copies of the dates when the children have their Forest School sessions and there are also copies in reception.
