Hanwell's Learning Intent

Our Curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure progression in skills and to support the learning of powerful knowledge. We believe that our curriculum motivates and inspires our pupils and we are proud of what our pupils achieve during their time at Hanwell Fields Community School.

We use the White Rose Maths curriculum, Purple Mash for computing, Project X for reading, Primary Language Network for French and all other subjects follow the United Learning Curriculum.  We recognise the need to support teacher workload and have chosen these curriculums to support our teachers with this. In addition, using these published curriculums ensures that all of our subjects cover a broad range of skills and knowledge, meet the National Curriculum expectations and are progressive across year groups.  Within each subject, teachers have the autonomy to bring their lessons alive and we encourage them to plan for memorable experiences.

We have 6 core principles:

  • Entitlement – Every child is taught the whole curriculum. We have specialist teachers to ensure the best knowledge is provided.
  • Coherence – The national curriculum is carefully sequenced so that powerful knowledge builds term by term and year by year.
  • Mastery – We ensure that knowledge, skills and concepts are secure before moving on. Pupils frequently revisit prior learning and apply their understanding of new concepts.
  • Adaptability – Lessons are brought to life and reflect our local community. They are adapted to meet the needs of all learners and allow success for all.
  • Representation – Our pupils are represented in the curriculum and it takes them beyond their immediate experience.
  • Education with Character- We ensure that beyond the taught timetable our curriculum sparks curiosity to nourish both the head and heart.
