Welcome to Butterflies!

Welcome to Butterflies – Our Reception Classes at Hanwell Fields Community School!

Welcome to Butterflies, our warm and welcoming Reception classes (Glasswing and Palmfly) where children take their next exciting step in school life.

In Butterflies, we build on the strong foundations developed in Nursery by continuing to support your child’s independence, confidence, and love for learning. Reception is a time of incredible growth—children begin to see themselves as learners, develop deeper friendships, and become increasingly curious about the world around them.

What Happens in Reception?

Reception is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). We follow a play-based curriculum that encourages exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning—while gently introducing more structure and routine to get children ready for Key Stage 1.

Your child will be supported to:

  • Develop early reading and writing skills through phonics and storytelling
  • Explore early maths through play and real-life experiences
  • Grow in confidence and independence
  • Build friendships and learn to work as part of a team
  • Develop skills for problem-solving, resilience, and managing emotions

Our Reception Learning Environment

Our classrooms are carefully designed to inspire children’s curiosity, encourage independence, and reflect their interests. With access to both indoor and outdoor learning spaces, children are free to move, play, build, create, and question in a setting that feels like a natural extension of their world.

We believe children learn best when they are:

  • Safe
  • Heard
  • Encouraged
  • Celebrated for who they are

Working in Partnership

We know that parents and carers are children’s first and most important educators. That’s why we value strong partnerships with families. Whether it’s attending parent workshops, joining us for some planned sessions, or chatting at drop-off and pick-up, we love to work together to give your child the very best start. Throughout your child’s Reception year, you as parents will also continue to have access to your child’s Tapestry account where we share learning from school and home!

Helping at Home

Little things make a big difference! You can support your child’s learning by:

  • Reading together every day, sharing magical stories and talking about the new words you hear.
  • Talking about numbers, letters, and new vocabulary
  • Encouraging them to dress, tidy up, and organise themselves
  • Celebrating each time your child tries hard
  • Encouraging your child to try new foods and experiences

Have Questions About Reception?

We’re always happy to talk and answer any questions you might have. Whether you’re new to our school or moving up from Caterpillars, please get in touch with our Early Years Lead—we are all here to help make this transition smooth, joyful, and exciting!

Tapestry Online Learning Journal

In Butterflies we use the Tapestry app and online platform to help us record, track, and celebrate children’s progress, and we then share this with families. Text, images, and videos are uploaded in real time via tablets in school as our team interacts with children in structured activities, group times and during free play.

“Tapestry connects staff, parents, and children together, making the learning journey a really collaborative one.”

Tapestry creates an online learning journey that allows us to make assessments, identify next steps for learning, and ultimately, create a complete story of your child’s time with us.

We know that parents know their children best, and therefore we ask you to contribute to your child’s learning journey by sharing information and key events from home too.

Tapestry is an entirely secure system, with each parent receiving their own login. You can then access your child’s learning journey at any time- all you will need is to download the app on your phone, register with us, and remember your pin code!

Please Note: It is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard children, and because of this, we ask you to respect your child’s journal. There will be occasions where your child is working alongside classmates and will therefore appear in another child’s observations.

As always, if you have further questions, then please ask.
