Welcome to Caterpillars Nursery

In Caterpillars at Hanwell Fields Community School, we believe that every child deserves the very best start to their learning journey. Our focus on ‘school readiness’ means that we work closely with each child to build the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to thrive—not just in Reception, but throughout their educational life.

We understand that starting school is a big step, so everything we do in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is designed to help children become independent, resilient, and eager to learn. From making choices during play to managing their own belongings, we give children meaningful opportunities to practise the everyday routines and problem-solving skills that build confidence and independence.

Our warm and experienced team creates a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged to explore. We support them to:

  • Build strong relationships with both adults and peers
  • Develop listening and attention skills
  • Learn to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs
  • Manage simple tasks independently, like using the toilet, washing hands, or putting on coats
  • Follow simple routines and instructions
  • Develop early literacy and numeracy skills through playful, engaging activities

Our Daily and weekly routines

As a school-based nursery, we ask that all children attend their 15 or 30-hour funded sessions daily, from Monday to Friday during term time. We understand that this might be challenging at the start of your child’s year in Caterpillars, but we encourage a minimum of three sessions per week to start with, building up to five as the year progresses. Regular attendance is a key part of becoming school ready. Coming to nursery every day helps children:

  • Understand the pattern and rhythm of the week
  • Form stronger friendships and relationships
  • Settle into routines that mirror those in Reception
  • Build stamina and confidence towards attending for a full school day

Children who attend consistently are more likely to feel secure, confident, and excited about starting school the following September.

How You Can Help at Home

Families play a vital role in supporting school readiness. Whether it’s encouraging your child to dress themselves, talking about their day, or enjoying a bedtime story together, the small things you do each day make a big difference.

If you have any questions about how we support school readiness in Caterpillars, or how you can help at home, please speak with our Early Years lead or a member of our school office team—we’re always happy to help!
