Intent

At Hanwell Fields we want all children to have the tools to be able to communicate accurately both verbally and in writing to express themselves effectively. We want children to enjoy writing for a range of audiences and purposes. Children will have the ability to write fluently with an author’s voice. They will have a sophisticated bank of vocabulary and an excellent knowledge of writing techniques. They will be able to structure and organise their writing to suit the genre they are writing. They will have the skills to edit and improve their work so that writing that they produce is to the best of their ability or better.

Implement

  • Phonics will be taught rigorously and consistently using regular assessment to support children’s knowledge of sounds and application to spelling.
  • Writing will be taught daily through discrete lessons and children will be given opportunities to practise across all areas of the curriculum.
  • Writing will cover all areas of the National Curriculum.
  • Writing, where possible, will be driven by a quality text.
  • Children will be given opportunities to publish and share their work.

Impact

  • Termly writing assessments will be carried out. This will be independent writing that will be used for assessment and to set targets.
  • Throughout the school, writing will be on display to allow children to share their published work.
  • Writing progress books will be kept to show children’s progress as they move up through the school.
  • Regular pupil progress meetings and moderation meets will take place to support assessment.
