Intent

At Hanwell Fields, we believe it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they understand the world they live in. The purpose of Religious Education in our school is to help children gain and enhance knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other key religions in Great Britain. We want children to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape sense of identity, way of life and behaviour, as well as develop the ability to make informed and rational judgements about religious and moral issues. Thus, Religious Education is taught throughout the school in a way to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school through exploring important key questions. Religious Education plays an important role, along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHE, in promoting social awareness and understanding of others in our children. Rather than take anything on face value, we encourage our pupils to actively ask questions about the world and reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens. All religions and their communities are treated with respect and we seek to make links, between home, school and all faith communities. Our curriculum is designed to encourage creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independence in an ever changing and diverse world.

Implement

To provide our creative curriculum, we base our learning on the Hertfordshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. We study the key religions that make up our diverse society: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. Each of these religions are valuable in education for all our pupils. In Early Years Foundation Stage, our focal point is Christianity and references are made to other beliefs and cultures. Children explore religions through the different festivals and stories that make them up. In KS1 and KS2, other principal religions are studied in depth. We begin to look at exploring these religions further than just their key beliefs and relating them to our own experiences and values. For first-hand experiences, we visit different places of worship for instance mosques, gurdwaras and churches. Hanwell Fields also enjoys informative assemblies and collective worship through our associate church, St Francis. Children engage in activities such as Christingle and experience festivals such as Easter, Christmas and Holi as whole school events with members of the wider community.

Impact

It is evident through our children’s inquisitive minds and curious questions that they enjoy learning about other religions and their beliefs. Through their R.E. learning, the children are able to make links between their own lives and of others in their community and in the wider world, appreciating their cultures and ways of life. Children are respectful of other’s beliefs and ready to be citizens of a wider community.
