Reading

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the
more places you'll go.” Dr Seuss

Intent

Research suggests the importance of reading for pleasure for both educational purposes as well as personal development (Clark and Rumbold, 2006). At Hanwell we endeavour for every pupil to have a love for reading. Children will learn to decode, read fluently and comprehend. They will experience a rich and diverse reading diet covering challenging, age appropriate subject matter. They will become familiar with a wide range of classic and modern authors, to ensure that they have the stamina and the fluency to read at length and to foster a curiosity about the use of language and the love of words.

Implement

  • Phonics will be taught rigorously and consistently using regular assessment to ensure that every child can decode and blend.
  • High quality reading lessons will be taught daily and consistently to ensure that every child can comprehend the texts that they read.
  • Every child will take part in a ‘read aloud session’ daily using a breadth of texts.
  • Every child will visit the library weekly and will be supported to choose books that will engage and challenge them.
  • Each year group will use the ‘Big Six’ set of books to help to broaden their reading diet and give them experience of aspirational texts.
  • Each year group will have a ‘Bookshelf’ of suggested appropriate texts.
  • Appropriate interventions will be used and monitored to ensure every child ‘keeps up’.

Impact

  • Half termly phonics assessments will measure attainment and progress in phonics.
  • Termly assessment of reading using standardised tests will help to monitor attainment and progress.
  • Outcomes in books will support teachers to measure attainment and progress.
  • Termly moderation and pupil progress meetings will support teachers with accurate assessment.
  • Pupil and parent voice will show that reading is a of high priority and children have a love for reading.
